Honduras: Military takes over prisons in crackdown against gang violence after riots | Oneindia News
The government of Honduras has announced a crackdown on organised crime within its prison system after an attack in a women’s penitentiary left 46 people dead last week.
The Hondurs Fforces have dubbed their initiative to regain control of the prisons “Operation Faith and Hope”.
Searches were under way on yesterday morning too at the Tamara Penal Centre …and the armed forces had recovered high-calibre weapons, grenades, ammunition, cell phones and devices for internet access within the prison walls.
The initial search appeared to focus on the men’s prison, though Tamara was also the site of last week’s deadly attack in a women’s detention centre that can house approximately 900 people.
Leftist President Xiomara Castro announced last week that she would hand the military police control of the prison system, a departure from a past stance of demilitarizing security, as her administration seeks to stop organized crime activity inside prisons.
