Israel’s parliament has approved the first part of a controversial judicial overhaul pushed by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government that has sparked the country’s worst political crisis in years.
The vote came after a stormy session in which opposition lawmakers chanted “shame” and then stormed out of the chamber.
Trump’s unexpected intervention has pushed Israel and Hamas back to the negotiating table. The intense pressure from Trump’s ultimatum, calling for a ceasefire extension and the release of hostages, has led both sides to resume high-stakes talks in Doha, Qatar. Israel has sent a delegation with the hope of securing the release of American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander and others held by Hamas, in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire extension. While Israel seeks the safe return of hostages, Hamas is demanding further concessions, including the release of 24 presumed-living hostages and a permanent end to the war.
