Hawaii Wildfires: The economic impact of the Maui wildfires on Hawaiian economy | Oneindia News

Still recovering from the crippling effects of the pandemic, Hawaii is now looking at a shattered economy after the catastrophic wildfires in Maui.

Maui is the second-largest island in the archipelago.

Over 80% of the Hawaiian economy depends on tourism, with over 70% residents employed in the tourism industry.

Over 1.5 million people have visited Maui so far this year, a 6% increase over the same period last year.

But now, with hotels, restaurants and shops destroyed, and thousands homeless, the Hawaii Tourism Authority has had to ask non-essential visitors to leave, and tourists to stay away from the islands for now.
