Maksym Kuzinov: Russian pilot who defected to Ukraine with an MI-8 helicopter,to be rewarded by Kyiv
A Russian pilot who had defected to Ukraine with an Mi-8 helicopter will receive a substantial reward of half a million dollars for changing sides and taking Russia’s military equipment with him.
Ukraine’s military intelligence spokesman, Andriy Yusov, said on Ukrainian television that the money would be paid in the national currency…and has also called on other Russian military personnel to follow suit and defect to Kyiv’s side.
Maksym Kuzminov, a 28-year-old Russian helicopter pilot, surrendered to Ukraine last month, bringing with him an Mi-8 helicopter and stolen fighter jet spare parts.
Kuzminov served in the “319th separate helicopter regiment” based in Russia’s Far Eastern Primorye region.
His arrival in Ukraine marked the end of a 6-month secret defection plot he had worked out with Ukraine, which involved moving his family out of Russia.
Ukraine's Parliament had started the "I want to live" initiative in April 2022 encouraging Russian soldiers to surrender and offering them up to $1 million for stolen equipment.
Ukraine has an official list of rewards for Russian soldiers who defect with military equipment such as aircraft and heavy weapons.
Senator JD Vance, nominated as Donald Trump's vice-presidential running mate, opposes continued US funding for Ukraine, advocating for peace negotiations instead. Vance's criticisms of the Biden administration's handling of the Ukraine war and his belief that the conflict benefits American business have fueled tensions with Ukrainian President Zelensky. With Trump promising to end the war swiftly, their potential election victory could significantly alter US-Ukraine relations.

Ukraine’s top commander, Aleksandr Syrsky, is reportedly ready to lay down arms and capitulate to Russia, according to a claim made by a lawmaker from President Vladimir Zelensky’s party. The claim was made by MP Mariana Bezuglaya from the ‘Servant of the People’ party, who is also the deputy chair of the National Security, Defense, and Intelligence Committee.
Syrsky, who became Ukraine’s highest-ranking general in early February, succeeded Valery Zaluzhny, the former general who oversaw last year’s unsuccessful attempts to repel Russian forces. Bezuglaya accused Syrsky and Zaluzhny of secretly colluding to prevent a Ukrainian victory, stating that the two generals belong to a “generals’ mafia” that is more interested in protecting their own privileges than in defeating Russia.

The past week in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has seen active combat continuing at multiple locations along the front line, with Moscow reporting new gains in Donbass and the liberation of more villages from Kiev’s forces.
On Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the liberation of Chigari, a small settlement located shortly to the northwest of the town of Gorlovka, Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic. The settlement, which has been reduced into rubble over the years of fighting in formerly-Ukrainian Donbass, has been used by Kiev’s forces as one of the staging points to launch indiscriminate artillery and missile strikes on Gorlovka
