Minister defends government’s record on school buildings
Cabinet minister Grant Shapps defends the government’s record on school buildings, saying “the budget was increased by a quarter in 2021”.
The defence secretary insists schools have been built or refurbished at a rate of up to “500 a year”, he also plays down the numbers of schools impacted as being “100 out of 22,000” which he says is a “different scale” from closures due to Covid.

Gareth Southgate has resigned as manager of the England men’s national football team after almost eight years at the helm. It comes just two days after England’s defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024.
