Belgium 'Pipigate' Scandal: Justice Minister faces Parliament; Apologises to country's Police Force

Vincent Van Quickenborne, Belgium’s justice minister, has faced the parliament following a controversy involving his birthday party guests, who were recorded urinating on an unoccupied police van.

In the face of the ensuing uproar, now being referred to as “Pipigate” by local media and “Pee-gate” by the English media, he has maintained that he was unaware of the actions of his guests… but expressed his regret for the scandal.

At yesterday’s hearing, he apologised to the country’s entire police force, some of whom are investigating the drunken late-night incident.

He has refuted allegations that he was seen laughing at the incident and pretending to urinate.

Instead, he insisted that he was performing “air guitar.” The incident led to widespread criticism from opposition politicians and police unions, who expressed outrage after initial reports emerged in the aftermath of Van Quickenborne’s 50th birthday celebrations on August 14.
