Vito Scaletta is a Sicilian immigrant who arrived in America as a child, with his sister Francesca and his parents.

His mother was a housewife and his father, Antonio Scaletta, worked on the docks, hired by the man who had organized their transport.

Although he worked a lot, a large part of the money he earned went into alcohol and he ended his days drowned in the docks, putting his family in financial difficulty.

At school, Vito met Joe Barbaro and became friends.

Both being poor, they started doing petty crimes to earn a little money until the day they were spotted.
