On Oct.
7, Hamas executed "the worst terrorist attack in Israel in decades," NBC News reports.
.
Hundreds of people have been killed and taken hostage by the militant group.
Hamas was founded in 1987 amid conflict against Israel occupying Gaza and the West Bank.
.
Ismail Haniyeh currently leads the group, which is one of two main "political organizations in the Palestinian territories," NBC News reports.
.
Hamas was once associated with the
Muslim Brotherhood, but has distanced itself from the Islamist movement in recent years.
In 2006, Gaza Strip elections went in Hamas' favor, which resulted in a power struggle with Fatah.
All Fatah politicians were ousted by force, and
Hamas retains political control in the area today.
In 2007, Israel took control of
various routes to Gaza, eventually
blockading the area to prevent future attacks.
The blockade has regularly been condemned by the U.N.
And human rights groups.
Hamas considers itself to be "a freedom-fighting movement" attempting to liberate Palestinians
and reclaim parts of Israel, NBC News reports.
However, the group's use of violence
is divisive among many Palestinians, and
other countries have deemed the organization to be terrorists, NBC News reports.
.
After Hamas' attacks on Israel, the U.S., U.K., France, Germany and Italy issued a joint statement.
All of us recognize the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.
, Joint statement made by the U.S., U.K., France, Germany and Italy .
But make no mistake: Hamas does
not represent those aspirations, and it
offers nothing for the Palestinian people
other than more terror and bloodshed, Joint statement made by the U.S., U.K., France, Germany and Italy

These hostages were killed during the October 7 Hamas-led attack. The Israeli Air Force struck over 70 targets in Gaza, including weapon depots and terror group infrastructure. Ground forces killed operatives and located rocket launchers in Rafah and Jabaliya. This marks a significant breakthrough for Israel in Rafah, despite international concerns about a high-casualty operation affecting hostage negotiations. A senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative was also killed.

Hamas’s armed wing said that the commander of its forces in the Tulkarem area of the West Bank was among four members of the group killed during a day-long Israeli raid in the town of Dayr al-Ghusun. A statement from the Izzaldin al-Qassam Brigades names Alaa Shreiteh, 45, as commander of the al-Qassam Brigades in the Tulkarem governorate. Shreiteh was jailed by Israel between 2002 and 2016. According to the IDF, there was a twelve-hour gun battle in the Tulkarem area of the West Bank between its forces and Hamas militants in which four Hamas men were killed. However, the identity of Alaa Shreiteh was revealed by the al-Qassim brigade early on Sunday. Hamas confirmed that four of the men killed during the raid in Deir al-Ghusun village were from its al-Qassam armed wing. The Palestinian health ministry said their bodies had been taken by the Israeli military. There was no information about the fifth man, whose body was too disfigured for immediate identification, the Palestinian health ministry in the West Bank said.

In an unprecedented move, the United States is preparing to enact sanctions against an army unit of its steadfast ally, Israel's Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). As reported by Axios, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is anticipated to declare sanctions targeting the Israel Defense Forces' "Netzah Yehuda" battalion in the near future. Allegations of human rights violations within the Israeli-held West Bank have prompted this action against the Netzah Yehuda battalion.

Seven months into the conflict triggered by Hamas's October 7 attack, Israeli forces are engaged in fierce battles with Palestinian militants in Gaza, focusing on Rafah near the Egyptian border and new flashpoints in northern and central areas. An incident of friendly fire in Jabalia resulted in the deaths of five Israeli soldiers and injuries to seven others. Despite heavy fighting and Israeli airstrikes across Gaza, Prime Minister Netanyahu has ordered an offensive in Rafah, claiming mass evacuations have prevented a humanitarian catastrophe. He emphasised that planning for Gaza's future governance is premature until Hamas is defeated. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant countered by calling for Palestinian entities, supported by international actors, to govern Gaza post-conflict. Meanwhile, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh declared that Hamas and other Palestinian factions would determine Gaza's governance, reiterating demands for a permanent ceasefire and the lifting of the siege. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with 278 Israeli troops and at least 35,233 Palestinians killed, and has led to severe shortages of essential supplies in Gaza.

Hamas has accepted a ceasefire proposal from Egypt and Qatar. At the same time, Israel continues its bombing campaign in eastern Rafah despite not accepting the ceasefire terms. Reports indicate that around 100,000 Palestinians in Rafah have been asked to evacuate. Ismail Haniyeh, representing Hamas, informed Qatari and Egyptian officials of the group's approval of the ceasefire. However, Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu's office stated that the proposed deal falls short of Israel's demands but will still send a delegation for negotiations.
