Von der Leyen and Metsola arrive in Israel in show of solidarity after Hamas attacks
The visit to Israel by the presidents of two of the EU's most important institutions comes six days after Hamas carried out its surprise land, sea and air attack in Israel, which has left more than 1,300 people dead since 7 October - more than in the entire Second Intifada - and 3,200 wounded.
At least 34 Palestinians were killed as Israeli airstrikes ravaged Gaza late Friday into Saturday, according to health officials. Twelve of the dead were sheltering at the Palestine Stadium in Gaza City, with additional casualties reported in residential apartments and tents in Muwasi.
The Gaza Health Ministry says the death toll from the war now exceeds 56,000 â more than half of them women and children. Amid the carnage, Donald Trump told reporters a Gaza ceasefire could arrive âwithin a week,â raising hopes as Israeli minister Ron Dermer prepares to visit Washington for talks. However, ceasefire conditions remain deadlocked, with Hamas willing to release hostages in exchange for ending the war â an offer Netanyahu refuses unless Hamas is disarmed and exiled.
Meanwhile, UN aid convoys are being looted as Palestinians face starvation. Israel allowed only limited food supplies into Gaza after blocking aid for over two months.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced Ukraine is now fully aligning with European Union sanctions on Iran.
