Maratha Community Protests for Reservations: Highways Blocked, Railway Tracks Obstructed| Oneindia
Protests by the Maratha community in Maharashtra intensified, with highway blockades and railway track obstructions.
Demonstrators blocked the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway, causing traffic disruptions, while another group obstructed railway tracks in Solapur.
In Jalna, a panchayat samiti office was set on fire during a protest.
Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange continued his hunger strike, emphasising the community's demand for complete reservation.
Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray urged the Centre to address the Maratha reservation issue, while Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed efforts to resolve the matter.
Eknath Shinde has stepped down as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra following the Mahayuti alliance’s resounding victory in the assembly elections. Shinde submitted his resignation to Governor C P Radhakrishnan, who requested him to serve as a caretaker CM until a successor is appointed.
The spotlight now shifts to the selection of the next chief minister, with BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis and Shinde both emerging as contenders. The BJP, which secured 132 seats to become the single-largest party, has bolstered its claim to the top post. However, the Shiv Sena, led by Shinde, is demanding continuity in leadership, citing coalition precedents and support from the party’s MLAs and the Maratha community.
