Maratha Reservation Protests: Manoj Jarange Patil becomes the face of reservation demand | Oneindia
Manoj Jarange Patil has emerged as one of the most influential voices in Maharashtra today as the face of the Maratha quota agitation.
The 40-year-old farmer has been leading the agitations and pulling in massive crowds in a bid to get reservation for the Maratha community.
On Wednesday (November 1), Jarange announced that he would stop drinking water from evening if the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government did not fulfil his demand.
The fresh ultimatum came after Jarange’s earlier protests and hunger strike in the last couple of months have worked in intensifying the demand for reservation for the politically influential Maratha community which comprises nearly 30 percent of Maharashtra’s population.
Eknath Shinde has stepped down as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra following the Mahayuti alliance’s resounding victory in the assembly elections. Shinde submitted his resignation to Governor C P Radhakrishnan, who requested him to serve as a caretaker CM until a successor is appointed.
The spotlight now shifts to the selection of the next chief minister, with BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis and Shinde both emerging as contenders. The BJP, which secured 132 seats to become the single-largest party, has bolstered its claim to the top post. However, the Shiv Sena, led by Shinde, is demanding continuity in leadership, citing coalition precedents and support from the party’s MLAs and the Maratha community.
