UN Declares Once-in-a-Century Floods in East Africa: 1.6 million at Risk | Oneindia News
The UN has declared Somalia and East Africa floods a once-in-a-century event, affecting 1.6 million people, worsened by El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole, and causing at least 10 deaths.
The unrest has led to tragic outcomes, with at least five protestors being shot dead and over 150 injured in Nairobi. Police reportedly used tear gas and live rounds to disperse thousands who stormed Kenya's Parliament, setting part of it on fire. Kenyan President William Ruto condemned the protests, labelling them “treasonous” but did not address the widespread outrage against the finance bill that triggered the demonstrations. The nationwide protests, which called for a “total shutdown” of the country, turned violent as police clashed with demonstrators. India has issued an advisory for its citizens in Kenya to exercise extreme caution and limit non-essential movements amid escalating violent protests in the East African nation. The protests are in response to the Kenyan government's proposed tax hikes.
