Russian lawmakers approve budget with record amount earmarked for defence spending
Under the spending plan, the country's largest ever, defence spending is expected to overtake social spending next year for the first time in modern Russian history.
The development comes as the Kremlin is eager to shore up support for President Vladimir Putin before a March presidential election.
Russian and Chinese naval forces have commenced a series of joint military exercises, titled 'Maritime Joint-2024,' in the Pacific Ocean. The three-day drills, which began near the Chinese city of Zhanjiang, aim to enhance the naval forces' capability to address security threats, maintain international and regional stability, and strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations, according to a statement from Beijing's Defense Ministry. Two vessels from Russia’s Pacific Fleet are participating in the exercises, as reported by the fleet’s press office on Monday via TASS. The participating crews are set to conduct a range of activities, including air defence exercises, drills involving anti-submarine aviation, resupply operations while underway, and sea rescue training.
