Transport Secretary hails flight using sustainable fuel
The first transatlantic flight to use 100% sustainable aviation fuel has taken off from Heathrow Airport for JFK in New York.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper said it's an "important first step as it shows Britain is ambitious about decarbonising aviation." Mr Harper also revealed plans for new legislation which will ensure all flights have at least 10% sustainable fuel by 2030.

The energy secretary has stressed that a third runway at Heathrow Airport would be delivered in line with the government's plans on reducing carbon emissions. Ed Miliband said: "This government has shown global leadership on the climate crisis since we came to power" and that "any decision on aviation expansion will have to meet our carbon budgets and local environmental standards". The shadow chancellor has argued that Rachel Reeves's plan to expand Heathrow Airport doesn't do enough to tackle economic issues affecting people now, claiming it will only come into effect in the next 10-30 years, if at all. Mel Stride did, however, assert his support for Reeves's planned Heathrow expansion, despite citing Labour divisions about the issue including Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan's objections. Rachel Reeves has asserted that she is "confident" that her plans for Heathrow expansion will find the right balance between sustainable aviation and economic growth. This comes a day after the chancellor's major speech outlining plans for economic growth and initiatives, including a third runway at Heathrow Airport and investments into the Oxford-Cambridge 'Growth Corridor'. Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan says he does not support a third runway at Heathrow Airport, siting noise pollution, air quality and the impact on climate change targets. Report by Blairm. Like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/itn and follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/itn
Along with an expansion of Heathrow Airport, the chancellor announced the government’s backing for housing, transport and other investment in the Oxford-Cambridge corridor, which she said could become “Europe’s Silicon Valley” and add £78 billion to the UK’s economy by 2035. Rachel Reeves also declared government support for the redevelopment of the area around Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium. Along with these investments, Reeves announced other key points such as a £65 million investment by the National Wealth Fund in expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Report by Faragt.
