Three new felony charges and six new
misdemeanor charges were filed against President Joe Biden's son in California on Dec.
7, AP reports.
.
Hunter is also facing
federal firearms charges in Delaware.
According to special counsel David Weiss,
Hunter "spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills.".
The charges stem from $1.4 million Hunter owed for the tax years 2016 to 2019.
He has since paid those back taxes, AP reports.
Hunter faces up to 17 years in prison if convicted.
Abbe Lowell, Hunter's attorney, accused the special
counsel of "bowing to Republican pressure.".
Based on the facts and the law,
if Hunter’s last name was anything
other than Biden, the charges in
Delaware, and now California,
would not have been brought, Abbe Lowell, Hunter's attorney, via statement.
The current indictment comes as
GOP Congress members push for an impeachment inquiry into the president.
The House will vote next week on whether
it will formally authorize the inquiry
In a landmark decision, Hunter Biden, the son of sitting US President Joe Biden, has been found guilty on three felony counts related to illegal gun possession. The federal court in Wilmington delivered the verdict on Tuesday, marking the first time a child of a current US president has been convicted of a crime. Hunter Biden faced charges of lying about his drug use when purchasing a firearm and illegally possessing the weapon. The charges stemmed from a 2018 incident in which Biden, then struggling with drug addiction, bought a Colt Cobra .38-calibre revolver. When completing the mandatory background check form, Biden falsely stated that he was not using illegal drugs, a misrepresentation that led to his conviction.
