Large sections of Australia are currently experiencing sweltering conditions, leading the national weather forecaster to issue bushfire warnings across multiple states.
In New South Wales, the most populous state, over 50 fires were reported on December 16, prompting a total fire ban in various areas, including Sydney.
The state's rural fire service, communicating via social media, indicated the deployment of more than 700 firefighters and incident management personnel, addressing blazes amid widespread high and extreme fire danger.
Authorities have cautioned about a heightened risk of bushfires during this Australian summer, following two relatively calm seasons compared to the devastating "Black Summer" of 2019-2020, which ravaged an area equivalent to Turkey and claimed 33 lives.
Israel has issued Hamas a one-week ultimatum to accept a proposed deal brokered by the US, Egypt, and Qatar. This agreement entails the release of several hostages in exchange for a six-week cessation of hostilities. The ultimatum was reportedly communicated through Egyptian officials, suggesting Hamas has until the following week to respond.
