He was awarded the Best Young Officer's Trophy in 1999 and a COAS Commendation Card in 2000 for his outstanding performance. His bravery and commitment were most evident during a counter-insurgency operation in Rajouri, J&K, in August 2000. Leading his troops in a fierce battle against terrorists, Capt Sekhar displayed extraordinary courage, eliminating multiple terrorists and saving his comrades. Tragically, he was martyred during the operation on August 12, 2000, just shy of his 25th birthday. For his supreme sacrifice and valour, Capt Sekhar Ghosh was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of India's highest gallantry awards.
