French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced on Friday (Dec 29) that his government plans to enhance security measures for New Year celebrations in France due to a 'very high' terror threat, according to Reuters.
Speaking to reporters, Minister Darmanin emphasised a robust mobilisation of police and gendarmerie services, citing a heightened terrorist threat linked to events in Israel and Palestine.
He called for the deployment of over 90,000 police and gendarmes, along with 5,000 soldiers from Operation Sentinelle.
Additionally, tens of thousands of firefighters, with a particular focus on Sécurité Civile, will be actively engaged, he stated.
A shooting incident near the Israeli embassy in Jordan's Amman resulted in one gunman's death and injuries to three police officers. The incident occurred in the Rabiah neighborhood, a known protest hotspot. Police cordoned off the area and urged residents to stay home. The event highlights ongoing tensions in Jordan, where many citizens of Palestinian origin oppose normalization with Israel amid the Gaza conflict.
