In a startling discovery, five large bombs were found concealed within the walls of the historic al-Nuri Mosque in Mosul, a relic of ISIL’s (ISIS’s) brutal reign over the region. This finding highlights the ongoing challenges faced in clearing explosives and rebuilding war-torn areas of Iraq.
The al-Nuri Mosque, renowned for its 12th-century leaning minaret, was devastated by ISIL in 2017 during the battle to liberate Mosul. The mosque has been a key focus of the United Nations cultural agency UNESCO’s restoration efforts since 2020. On Tuesday, UNESCO announced the discovery of five large-scale explosive devices hidden inside the southern wall of the Prayer Hall.
