The Supreme Court of India criticised the Gujarat government on Monday for granting remission to the 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case.

Despite being sentenced to life imprisonment, the Gujarat government released them in 2022 under its remission policy.

The Supreme Court bench asserted that the Gujarat government lacked jurisdiction to decide on the remission of sentence for the 11 convicts involved in the gangrape of Bilkis Bano and the Murder of her family members.

Furthermore, the apex court has ruled that the released convicts must surrender before the authorities within two weeks.
