Amid diplomatic tension between the Maldives and India, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has embarked on a five-day state visit to China, resulting in a series of key agreements signed between the two nations.
On January 10, President Muizzu and his wife, Sajida Mohammad, were warmly welcomed in Beijing, where they met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The visit culminated in the signing of 20 significant agreements, marking the elevation of bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
Maldives Environment Minister Fathima Shamnaz Ali Saleem has been arrested under allegations of practicing 'black magic' on President Mohamed Muizzu, as reported by local media. Alongside Shamnaz, her ex-husband Adam Rameez, who served in the President’s Office, and two others have also been detained on charges related to witchcraft, purportedly aimed at gaining influence over Muizzu.
The controversy emerged on June 23, leading to the remand of the four accused for seven days. Shamnaz was subsequently suspended from her position as state minister at the Ministry of Environment on Wednesday, according to local media outlet Sun.
