Certainly the new estimates highlight the scale of cancer today and indeed the growing burden of cancer that is predicted over the next years and decades, Freddie Bray, head of cancer surveillance at the IARC, via Al Jazeera.

The IARC's annual report, based on data from 185 countries and 36 types of cancer, found that there were an estimated 9.7 million cancer deaths in 2022.

The IARC added that approximately one in five people will develop cancer in their lifetime.

.

According to the IARC, one in nine men and one in 12 women will ultimately die from the disease.

.

The rapidly-growing global cancer burden reflects both population aging and growth, as well as changes to people’s exposure to risk factors, several of which are associated with socioeconomic development.
