Authorities announced on Sunday that the death toll from a devastating landslide in the southern Philippines has climbed to 54, with 63 individuals still unaccounted for.
The landslide, triggered by weeks of relentless rains, struck the mountain village of Masara in Davao de Oro province on Tuesday night.
The provincial government of Davao de Oro confirmed through a Facebook post that 54 bodies have been recovered thus far, while 32 residents sustained injuries and 63 individuals remain missing.
Three coastguard patrol ships, a plane and a navy vessel have been deployed by the Philippines to ensure the safety of around 100 activists and fishermen heading.. Sky News
Amidst escalating tensions in the South China Sea, the Philippines has taken a decisive step, deploying ships to a disputed area where it alleges China is constructing an artificial island. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr's office issued a statement confirming the deployment, emphasising the need to monitor what it termed as "supposed illegal activities" by China. Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela corroborated these claims, citing evidence of small-scale reclamation at the Sabina Shoal, known as Escoda by Manila. Despite these assertions, the Chinese embassy in Manila has yet to respond, potentially exacerbating bilateral rifts. The Philippine national security adviser has even called for the expulsion of Chinese diplomats over an alleged leak regarding a phone conversation about the maritime dispute.

On Tuesday, the Philippines lodged accusations against China's coast guard, alleging harassment and damage to one of its boats within a disputed section of the South China Sea. The Philippines rejected China's assertion that it had expelled two vessels from the contested shoal. According to the Philippine coast guard, its two vessels remained steadfast at the Scarborough Shoal, a significant focal point in the South China Sea dispute. However, one of the Philippine boats incurred damage due to the deployment of water cannons by two Chinese coast guard ships.

A Moroccan asylum seeker has been sentenced to life in jail for murder, with a minimum term of 45 years, at Teesside Crown Court. In October last year, 45-year-old Ahmed Alid stabbed Iranian Christian convert Javed Nouri at the house he was sharing with other asylum seekers before looking for more victims in Hartlepool town centre. He then stabbed and killed 70-year-old Terence Carney who was out for his regular early morning walk.
