Republican Proposal in Florida Aims to End Property Taxes in the State
Republican Proposal in , Florida Aims to End , Property Taxes in the State.
'Newsweek' reports that a new proposal in Florida
could eliminate property taxes, while also
increasing the state's sales tax.
Republican Representative Ryan Chamberlin has outlined his plan to abolish property taxes, proposing "replacing lost revenue with the establishment of a consumption tax.".
According to Chamberlin, a study will be required to
determine exactly how local governments would recoup
funds lost through property taxes from other sources.
This bill is about one thing.
It's about starting down the
road toward phasing out and
eliminating Florida's property tax, Ryan Chamberlin, Florida Republican Representative,
via 'Newsweek'.
Chamberlin said that the Office of Program Policy
Analysis and Government Accountability (OPPAGA)
would be tasked with conducting the necessary study.
The OPPAGA would then be required to submit
the findings of the study by July 1, 2025.
'Newsweek' reports that Democrats in the state
oppose Chamberlin's proposal, claiming the resulting
increase in sales tax could have a significant impact.
.
So by eliminating the property tax
which all municipalities count on,
we could possibly have, would you say,
one of the highest sales taxes in the
nation to compensate for that loss?, Joe Casello, Florida Democratic Representative,
via the 'Newsweek'.
Previously, Chamberlin has argued that Florida
homeowners never truly own their home due to paying
taxes even after a mortgage is completely paid off.
We all simply rent it from
the state, and as long as we
pay those rents, then we can
use the property we hold
a deed for.
This is not
a tax; it is slavery, Ryan Chamberlin, Florida Republican Representative,

A recent USA TODAY poll reveals that only 11% of Americans fully support the idea, while 29% think it's a good but unrealistic notion. In stark contrast, 53% of respondents opposed the plan, with the division deepening across party lines — 86% of Democrats rejected the proposal, while only 23% of Republicans supported it. The idea has met widespread opposition, with many questioning its feasibility and the long-term implications of such a move.

Donald Trump’s claimed role in brokering a Gaza ceasefire has intensified Arab American frustration with President Biden. Many feel Biden failed to secure peace despite months of opportunity, while Trump’s intervention seemingly pushed Israel to agree. The ceasefire, set to begin Sunday, follows pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu by Trump’s envoy. Arab American voters, particularly in Michigan, express anger over Biden’s handling of the war, branding him “Genocide Joe” and questioning Democratic support for Palestinian rights. Skepticism remains over the ceasefire’s durability.

The Pacific Palisades wildfire continues to wreak havoc in Los Angeles County, with thousands of homes destroyed and residents forced to evacuate. Amid the disaster, a political blame game has erupted between President-elect Donald Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom. Trump criticized Newsom for his handling of the crisis, accusing the Democratic governor of being responsible for the wildfires and failing to address water management issues that could have helped contain the flames. In response, Newsom urged an investigation into the water pressure problems impacting fire hydrants in the affected areas.
