Despite contacts between intermediaries, the United States rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine aimed at freezing the ongoing conflict, according to three Russian sources familiar with the discussions who spoke to Reuters.
This refusal marks the beginning of a third year of the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two and highlights the considerable gulf that still exists between the world's two largest nuclear powers.
"Russia as a whole is open to the negotiation process, but first we need to understand how ready Ukraine is," Dmitry Peskov, press secretary for Russian President Vladimir Putin, said.
