Starmer presses Sunak over Post Office chairman row

Rishi Sunak refuses to repeat allegations made by Kemi Badenoch earlier this week, that ex-Post Office boss Henry Staunton was lying.

During Prime Minister’s Questions, the Labour Leader said: “Would the Prime Minister be prepared personally to repeat the allegations made by his Business Secretary, that the former chair of the Post Office is lying when he says he was told to go slow on compensation for postmasters and limp to the next election?” The Prime Minister responded by saying the government has taken "unprecedented steps" to support victims of the scandal.

Starmer channels Blair & Miliband to launch election pledges

Sir Keir Starmer has unveiled a pledge card with six "first steps" the Labour Party would take if it were to form a government after the next general election. The steps include measures to invest in the NHS, education and policing, to set up a new national energy company and an elite border force, and to promote economic stability. The move, unveiled during a campaign speech in Essex, is reminiscent of Tony Blair’s five pledges ahead of Labour’s landslide victory in 1997, and less favourably of Ed Miliband’s promises carved into stone in 2015. Former Post Office exec tells inquiry she’s ‘truly sorry’

Angela van den Bogerd, a former senior director at the Post Office, arrived at the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry on Thursday morning. She began with an apology on the first of her two days of giving evidence, telling the inquiry she was "truly, truly sorry" for the "devastation" caused to wrongly convicted sub-postmasters and their families. Errors in the Post Office's Horizon IT system meant money appeared to be missing from many branch accounts when, in fact, it was not. As a result, more than 700 sub-postmasters were handed criminal convictions between 1999 and 2015. Report by Jonesia.
