Manipur HC amends 2023 order recommending ST status for Meiteis that led to clashes | Oneindia News
In a surprising turn of events, the Manipur High Court has revisited its March 2023 order and issued a modification that is set to have far-reaching implications.
During a review petition hearing on Wednesday, Justice Golmei Gaiphulshillu, presiding over a single-judge bench, took a decisive step by rescinding a paragraph from the March 27, 2023 order.
This paragraph, advocating for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe list, has been at the center of a heated legal and social debate.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh closed out 2024 with an emotional apology for the violent ethnic clashes that have ravaged the northeastern state since May 2023. In a heartfelt statement, Singh expressed deep regret, acknowledging the immense suffering caused by the ongoing conflict. He conveyed his apologies to the people of Manipur, recognizing the loss of lives, displacement of families, and the disruption of daily life that has followed the violent upheaval between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Despite the hardships of the past year, the Chief Minister offered a message of hope, expressing optimism for the restoration of normalcy in 2025. Singh urged all communities to forgive and move forward in peace, emphasizing the need for unity among Manipur’s diverse tribes, which he believes will pave the way for a peaceful and prosperous future.
