Bank of England keeps interest rates on hold

The Bank of England has voted to keep interest rates unchanged, but showed what was perhaps the clearest sign in years that cuts could come in the months ahead.

Bank governor Andrew Bailey said the economy is ā€œnot yet at the pointā€ where rates can be lowered, but things are ā€œmoving in the right directionā€.

For the first time since September 2021, no-one on the nine-person decision-making body that sets interest rates voted for an increase.

Starmer channels Blair & Miliband to launch election pledges

Sir Keir Starmer has unveiled a pledge card with six "first steps" the Labour Party would take if it were to form a government after the next general election. The steps include measures to invest in the NHS, education and policing, to set up a new national energy company and an elite border force, and to promote economic stability. The move, unveiled during a campaign speech in Essex, is reminiscent of Tony Blairā€™s five pledges ahead of Labourā€™s landslide victory in 1997, and less favourably of Ed Milibandā€™s promises carved into stone in 2015.
