The government has made a U-turn following a campaign to make assaulting a shop worker a separate criminal offence.

Rishi Sunak announced on Wednesday that his government would be amending its Criminal Justice Bill to bring in the new offence.

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said that while the U-turn is welcome, the government "are still not going far enough to tackle shoplifting and the blight on our town centres." Report by Kennedyl.
