On Monday, the United Kingdom Parliament passed the contentious Rwanda deportation bill, marking a significant step toward its enactment into law.
Despite months of opposition from various quarters including Parliament, courts, and civil society, the bill received approval.
The primary point of contention had been the concern for the human rights of asylum seekers.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Conservative party have been vigorously advocating for this legislation.
The bill aims to designate Rwanda as a safe third country, compelling judges to consider it as such.
Additionally, it seeks to grant decision-makers handling asylum applications the authority to bypass certain provisions of international and domestic human rights laws.
This move comes in response to a UK Supreme Court ruling that deems the deportation of migrants to Kigali as illegal.
In a historic U.S.-brokered deal, D.R. Congo and Rwanda have signed a peace agreement in Washington, witnessed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump hailed it as a âglorious triumph,â though critics argue it may serve U.S. interests in Congoâs mineral-rich east. The deal includes a trade framework for critical minerals, but M23 rebels reject its legitimacy. With thousands killed and millions displaced, experts warn that without inclusive enforcement and reforms, peace may remain elusive in the volatile Great Lakes region.

In a landmark diplomatic moment, DR Congo and Rwanda signed a historic U.S.-brokered peace deal in Washington aimed at ending decades of deadly conflict. President Donald Trump called it a âglorious triumphâ while hosting the signing ceremony in the Oval Office, flanked by VP JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The agreement includes âdisengagement, disarmament and conditional integrationâ of armed groups and signals potential U.S. access to DR Congoâs rare earth minerals. Yet deep questions remainâespecially regarding the M23 rebels, Rwandan troop presence, and humanitarian access. With both countries denying support for rival militias, the full terms remain classified, fueling skepticism.
Trump, however, hailed it as a generational victory. Previous similar treaties have failed. But this deal, supported by earlier Qatari mediation, might offer a sliver of hope in a region long marred by instability and mineral-fueled warfare.

Congo and Rwanda sign a US-mediated peace deal aimed at ending decades of bloody conflict
The Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group is the most prominent armed group in the conflict, and its major advance early this year left bodies on the streets. With 7 million people displaced in Congo, the United Nations has called it "one of the most protracted, complex, serious" crises on Earth.
