Why is Georgia gripped by protests over a 'foreign influence' bill?

In the past three weeks, tens of thousands of Georgians have rallied to protest against the reintroduction of controversial "foreign influence" that many critics have compared to repressive Russian legislation aimed at silencing dissent.

On 1 May, the bill was adopted by a large majority in parliament.

A third and final vote is needed for it to become law.
