Labour's Liz Kendall has reacted to the government's plan to introduce national service, calling it a "headline-grabbing gimmick." The shadow work and pensions secretary said: "An unfunded spending commitment that's more of a headline-grabbing gimmick rather than a proper plan to give young people real opportunities for the future."

A man has appeared in court charged with two counts of murder after the discovery of human remains in suitcases in Bristol, and, at a flat in west London. 34-year-old Yostin Andres Mosquera appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates Court earlier today.
