Putin Declares Zelensky's Rule Illegitimate, Asserts Ukrainian Parliament Sole Authority
Russian President Vladimir Putin has asserted that Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, is now the only legitimate authority in the country following the expiration of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s official term.
This statement was made during a press conference concluding Putin’s two-day official visit to Uzbekistan.
Russian forces have made significant progress in the villages of Evgenovka, Novgorodskoye, Timofeeva, Sokol, and Toretsk, repelling five Ukrainian counterattacks in the region. Over 400 Ukrainian troops and several units of hardware, including a U.S.-sent Bradley Fighting Vehicle, MaxxPro Vehicle, and an M777 Howitzer, were reportedly lost during the fighting in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) within 24 hours. Since capturing the town of Avdeevka in February, a major Ukrainian stronghold near Donetsk, Russian forces have reduced Kyiv troops' ability to shell the city and have steadily advanced in the DPR and other areas, including Ukraine's Kharkiv region, taking control of several settlements.

He recently hosted an international summit in Switzerland, excluding Russia, to rally backing for Ukraine's position. However, peace talks remain stalled due to stark differences between Ukrainian and Russian demands. The conflict continues with slow Russian advances, while Ukraine relies heavily on Western aid.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ratified a new law allowing certain prisoners to be paroled if they agree to enlist in the country's military. This legislation, aimed at bolstering Ukraine's military ranks, comes in response to the significant challenges the nation faces in its conflict with Russia. The details of the new law were published on the official website of the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada.
Initially submitted to the legislature in March, the bill is part of a broader effort by Ukraine to replenish its military forces. The legislation enables Ukrainian inmates to voluntarily enlist on a contractual basis and serve as long as martial law is in effect. The law specifically applies to convicts with three years or less remaining on their original prison sentences.

Russia warns Israel of consequences for potentially supplying Ukraine with Patriot air defense systems. Discussions reportedly involve transferring up to eight old Israeli systems via the US. This move could strain Israel-Russia relations and marks a potential shift in Israel's stance on military aid to Ukraine. The systems would significantly boost Ukraine's air defense capabilities against Russian attacks. Russia maintains that foreign weapons won't prevent it from achieving its military goals in Ukraine and may prolong the conflict.
