Italian PM Giorgia Meloni Wins in Defamation Case Against Journalist for Online Insult | Oneindia

A Milan court has ruled in favor of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, ordering journalist Giulia Cortese to pay €5,000 in damages for an online insult about Meloni's height.

The court deemed Cortese's comments on X (formerly Twitter) as "defamatory" and "body-shaming." This ruling comes after an October 2021 incident where Cortese posted a mocked-up photo of Meloni with fascist leader Benito Mussolini in the background.

Despite the judge ruling that the Mussolini post did not violate the law, the court supported Meloni regarding the height insult.

Cortese, who has also been fined an additional €1,200 (suspended), claims that Italy's government has issues with freedom of expression.

This case highlights ongoing tensions between the government and the media, with Italy dropping in the 2024 World Press Freedom Index.
