Wayanad Landslides: Union Minister Suresh Gopi Confirms Review of National Disaster Status
Union Minister Suresh Gopi on Sunday said that the Centre will examine the legality behind the demand from various quarters to classify as a national disaster the landslides that hit this north Kerala district and killed hundreds.
Gopi, who is Union Minister of State for Tourism, Petroleum and Natural Gas, said that the Central government will "examine its legal aspects" after carrying out an evaluation of the landslides which wiped away hundreds of homes in Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas of the district.
On the seventh day of rescue and relief operations in Kerala’s Wayanad, the devastating landslides have claimed 308 lives with 180 still missing. Over 6,700 people have been relocated to 53 relief camps across the district. The Kerala government has set up additional shelters and rescue camps in affected areas, while mass burials and interfaith prayers are being conducted for the victims.
