Freedom to Be: The Future of Trans Visibility Panel | Raising Our Voices
The Hollywood Reporter held its third annual Raising Our Voices luncheon, celebrating some of the industry's most powerful advocates for diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.
Annette Bening took over as moderator for the second panel, called "Freedom to Be: The Future of Trans Visibility," presented by ACLU.
She was joined by 'Baby Reindeer' breakout star Nava Mau, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, '9-1-1: Lone Star' actor Brian Michael Smith and ACLU lead attorney for LGBTQ+ legal cases Chase Strangio.
In the largest protest since Trump’s return to office, LGBTQ+ activists joined thousands across all 50 U.S. states in the ‘Hands Off’ movement. Demonstrators rallied against mass deportations, healthcare cuts, anti-trans policies, and corporate favoritism under Trump and Musk. With over 1,200 rallies and support from 150 organizations, chants for democracy, equity, and transgender protections echoed from Seattle to Boston. Protesters accused Trump and Musk of hijacking public systems for private gain. The LGBTQ+ community, alongside civil rights groups and veterans, emerged as a leading force in this nationwide resistance.

Demonstrators block traffic in Budapest in opposition to new law banning LGBTQ+ Pride events
The protest was the second in as many weeks since the ruling Fidesz party of Hungary used its two-thirds parliamentary majority last Tuesday to expedite the law, which critics say is the government's most recent assault on the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in the country.

Hungary LGBTQ law 2025 has sparked international backlash, with the UN urging its repeal. The new law bans pride events and allows authorities to fine attendees using Facial recognition. Hungary’s parliament passed the measure 136-27, citing child protection, but the UN warns it violates freedom of expression and assembly. Prime Minister Viktor Orban defends the law, rejecting what he calls "international gender agendas." Protests erupted in Budapest, while opposition lawmakers used smoke bombs in parliament. The UN demands action against discrimination and harassment targeting LGBTQ individuals.

Hungary LGBTQ ban passed as parliament votes to outlaw pride events nationwide. Opposition lawmakers set off smoke bombs in protest, but the law passed 136-27. It expands restrictions on LGBTQ content to public gatherings, granting police power to film attendees and imposing $500 fines. Thousands protested in Budapest, blocking Margaret Bridge. PM Viktor Orban claims LGBTQ activism threatens Hungary’s Christian values, but critics call it authoritarian overreach. Budapest Pride organizers vow resistance, calling the law fascist oppression.
