Scholz's SPD party narrowly survive regional election as coalition partners struggle
After the state election for Brandenburg concluded this weekend, both the Social Democrats and far-right Alternative for Germany emerged as biggest winners.
The liberal Free Democratic Party, part of Germany's ruling coalition, was left fighting for existence.

Sir Keir Starmer said a new treaty between the UK and Germany is "a once-in-a-generation" opportunity to reset the country's relationship with Europe. Speaking at a press conference in Berlin alongside German chancellor Olaf Scholz, the prime minister said the treaty will be "a once-in-a-generation chance to deliver for working people in Britain and in Germany".
