Sir Keir Starmer has delivered his first Labour Party conference speech as prime minister.
In a speech briefly disrupted by a pro-Palestine protester, he addressed the new government’s unpopular cuts to the winter fuel allowance, and warned of further tough decisions to turn the country around.
However, there were some announcements which will be welcome to many, including the introduction of a Hillsborough law, and guaranteed homes for veterans, young care leavers, and victims of domestic abuse.

In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Yemeni forces launched a daring and devastating 9-hour operation targeting the USS Harry J. Truman and its accompanying fleet in the Red Sea. Employing hypersonic missiles and drones, the Houthis inflicted significant damage on U.S. warships and fighter jets, forcing the American aircraft carrier to retreat to the northernmost part of the Red Sea. The operation marks the fifth clash between Yemeni forces and U.S. warships in recent weeks and underscores Yemen's defiant stance against U.S. and Israeli actions in Gaza. Brigadier General Yahya Saree reaffirmed Yemen’s commitment to escalating military operations until the siege on Palestine ends and Israel halts its actions.
