Britain's Conservative Party has elected Kemi Badenoch as its new leader, becoming the first Black woman to lead a major political party in the UK. Badenoch succeeds former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose tenure was marked by the Conservatives' worst election performance since 1832.

The energy minister has admitted the winter fuel payment cut was a "tough call" by the chancellor. Miatta Fahnbulleh urged pensioners struggling with their energy bills to get in touch with their suppliers. "We announced yesterday that there will be Ā£500 million worth of support available to people this winter. I know people are worried about their energy bills this winter - please pick up the phone and speak to your supplier," she said.
