Tom Tugendhat accuses PM of supporting state control
Om Tugendhat has accused Sir Keir Starmer of "believing in state control." The shadow security minister was addressing the Conservative conference in his bid to become the next Tory leader.
Mr Tugendhat also revealed he felt "deeply, deeply uncomfortable" about legalising assisted dying.

Sir Keir Starmer warned of a "hard path ahead" in his first speech as prime minister at the Labour conference in Liverpool. "What they've done is they've decided to take money from vulnerable pensioners and give it to the union paymasters. The opposition chief whip in the House of Commons has weighed in on the controversial comments about maternity pay at the Conservative conference. Kemi Badenoch had said statutory maternity pay, set up to support mothers for 39 weeks after having a baby, is a "function of tax" which she described as "excessive". A 96-year-old has been given a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to causing the death of a pedestrian by dangerous driving. June Mills, from Merseyside, was handed an 18-month suspended sentence at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday. She pleaded guilty to causing the death of Brenda Joyce, 76, in August 2023, after hitting the woman and another pedestrian when her car mounted the pavement.
