EU-Mercosur trade deal could be 'fair,' Šefčovič promises in confirmation hearing
Grilled by MEPs on the trade deal with Latin American countries, Slovakia’s Commissioner-designate defended a deal that would satisfy opponents demanding insurances for farmers and transparency.
The agreement reached by the European Commission contains new provisions which seek to respond to the opponents of the agreement. But the process that must follow the political agreement reached on Friday is far from a done deal for the European executive.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico warned Ukraine of possible retaliatory measures after Ukrainian President Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine would stop allowing Russian gas transit to Europe unless Moscow no longer benefits financially. Fico expressed disappointment over the decision and raised concerns about its impact on Slovakia’s economy. The dispute could affect the wider European energy supply, with Slovakia among the few countries still dependent on Russian gas.
