Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a surprise midnight assault on Ukraine's Sumy region, sending missiles and drones that resulted in widespread devastation.
The attack, which took place late Sunday night, targeted a residential building in the northwestern city of Sumy, 40 kilometres from the Russian border, killing at least 11 people, including two children, and injuring 89 others.
Ukrainian authorities confirmed that more than 400 people were evacuated from the damaged building, and rescue operations are ongoing.
