French government faces collapse after PM circumvents parliament over budget bill
French Prime Minister Michel Barnier used the controversial Article 49.3 of the French Consitution to force the adoption of next year's social security budget plan.
In retaliation, opposition parties from the left and far right are threatening his government with a no-confidence vote.

On December 4, 2024, French PM Michel Barnier was ousted in a no-confidence vote by 331 votes to 246. This marked the first time since 1962 that a French government collapsed due to such a motion. The vote followed Barnier's controversial budget, which sparked opposition from both the left-wing NPF and right-wing RN, creating a political crisis for President Macron as he faces uncertainty in appointing a new prime minister.
