Iraqi fighters To Join Syrian & Russian Forces Against Turkey Backed Jihadists, Hezbollah Stays Out
Iraqi fighters, backed by Iran, have crossed into Syria to join forces with Syrian and Russian military units in a fight against Turkey-backed jihadist rebels.
The deployment comes after the jihadists seized Aleppo, marking a significant blow to the Syrian government's control.
These reinforcements, primarily from Iraq's Badr and Nujabaa groups, are expected to focus on defending key Shiite shrines and supporting Assad’s forces on the frontlines.
However, Lebanon's Hezbollah, a key ally of Syria and Iran, has decided to stay out of this latest conflict.
Despite Hezbollah's earlier role in supporting Syrian forces, particularly in the fight against rebels, it is not ready to commit forces in the current escalation, reportedly due to the strain from its ongoing war with Israel.
The Syrian military, supported by Russian allies, has launched a devastating offensive against Takfiri militants in the northern regions of Hama, Aleppo, and Idlib, delivering a crushing blow to terrorist networks. The operation resulted in the elimination of approximately 320 jihadists, including top leaders of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, and the destruction of 12 terrorist bases and ammunition depots. In a significant development, Syrian forces successfully retook the strategic highway linking Mahardeh and Suqaylabiyah near Hama, alongside surrounding towns and villages. The offensive comes as a response to the escalation of militant activity, signaling a major victory for Damascus in its ongoing counterterrorism efforts.

Iran has accused the United States and Israel of orchestrating the recent jihadist attack in Syria, particularly targeting the Syrian city of Aleppo. Major General Mohsen Rezaei, a former commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), claimed that the assault was part of a broader effort to destabilize the region, extending conflicts from Gaza and Lebanon into Syria. He argued that the attack violated the 2020 ceasefire between the Syrian government and militants. Iran expressed full support for Syria in countering these foreign-backed terrorist actions. Additionally, Rezaei warned that Iran’s retaliatory operation, "True Promise III," would soon take place as a response to Israeli actions, signaling a heightened military escalation.

In a controversial claim, the Kyiv Post reports that Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) allegedly trained Islamist groups in Syria’s Idlib province, aiding them in attacking Russian forces. The Khimik Group, an HUR Special Forces unit, reportedly provided operational training and tactics, including the use of drones. Militants, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, recently launched their largest offensive in years, capturing parts of Aleppo before being pushed back by Syrian and Russian forces. Moscow has not officially commented on the alleged involvement of Ukrainian operatives in Syria. The development raises concerns over escalating proxy conflicts in the region.
