Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared 2024 as the "Year of Victory," celebrating the fastest territorial advances since the early days of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. With 4,500 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory captured and nearly 200 settlements falling to Russian control, Moscow claims full strategic dominance across the front lines. Meanwhile, Ukraine faces mounting challenges, including recruitment struggles and wavering Western military support. Is Ukraine running out of time to turn the tide? What does this mean for the future of the war, and could peace talks be on the horizon?

A citizen from Uzbekistan has been detained over the killing of Russian nuclear forces general Igor Kirillov, Russia's investigative committee has said. Sky News
Ukraine has claimed it is behind a bomb attack that killed a senior Russian general in charge of nuclear protection forces in Moscow on Tuesday. Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, who is chief of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Troops, was killed outside a block of flats some 7km (4 miles) southeast of the Kremlin. Defence Secretary John Healey said the general was a "bad man" with a proven record of "using chemical weapons against troops on the battlefield."

Russian Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the head of the Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defense Forces, was killed alongside his aide in a targeted bombing involving an explosive-laden electric scooter. The blast occurred outside an apartment building on Ryazansky Prospekt, shattering windows and causing significant damage.
The explosive device, with an estimated power of 300 grams of TNT, has raised questions about a possible security breach in Moscow. Kirillov, sanctioned by the UK in October for alleged chemical weapon use in Ukraine, was recently charged in absentia by Ukraine for similar accusations.
