'Bumpy ride' due to 'disastrous' previous government

The policing minister has unveiled a new bill hoping to crack down on the sale of knives, particularly online. Dame Diana Johnson announced raft of anti-knife crime plans, including making retailers report bulk or suspicious sales to police, and increasing the jail sentence for selling weapons to children or illegal blades such as zombie knives, to two years. The laws will collectively be known as 'Ronan's Law', named after 16-year-old Ronan Kanda who was murdered in Wolverhampton in 2022.

The UK economy grew in the final quarter of last year after better-than-expected expansion in December, according to official figures. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.1% higher between October and December. UK retail sales unexpectedly declined last month in a blow to the sector during the all-important festive shopping season, new official figures show. The volume of retail sales – which measures the quantity bought – fell by 0.3% in December, the Office for National Statistics said. A friend of Jaysley Beck has said sexual abuse in the Army is still going on years after the former Royal Artillery gunner's death. The body of the 19-year-old was found in a locker room at Wiltshire's Larkhill Camp in 2021. She had been subjected to relentless harassment from her line manager, Bombardier Ryan Mason, an inquest was told. Beck had also filed a complaint against Battery Sergeant Major Michael Webber who "pinned her down" and tried to kiss her at a work social. Former soldier Tamzin Hort compared being a woman in the Army to being "a piece of meat in a tank of sharks" and that "people get sexually assaulted left, right and centre, but nothing's done about it".
