NIGER JUNTA SWORN IN AS PRESIDENT FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS
Niger's junta has announced a five-year transition to constitutional rule with coup leader Abdourahamane Tiani sworn in as transitional president.
The move defies regional pressure for a quicker return to democracy after the 2023 ouster of President Mohamed Bazoum.
Tiani will lead the transition until 2030, mirroring the prolonged military rule in neighboring Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.
The junta has severed ties with former colonial power France, expelled European forces, and exited the West African bloc ECOWAS, pivoting toward Russian support amid ongoing jihadist violence in the Sahel.
