Pacific Islands is world's most aid-reliant region: report
Monday, 30 October 2023 A survey by the Lowy Institute's Pacific Aid Map found that the Pacific Islands is the most aid-reliant region in the world. Between 2008 and 2021, the region received over $40 billion in development assistance, with direct budget support to Pacific Island governments increasing to 40% in 2021. Climate-related aid accounted for 39% of all aid pledged to the region in 2021, but the Lowy report noted that climate financing remains insufficient. Australia is the largest donor to the Pacific Islands, followed by China.
