Iceland declared a state of emergency after powerful earthquakes hit the southwestern Reykjanes peninsula. The town, Grindavik, is located near popular tourist destinations such as the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa resort and the Svartsengi geothermal plant. The town was evacuated after the Icelandic Met Office suggested a magma intrusion beneath Grindavik.
