China warns of coming respiratory surge after pneumonia hit kids
Monday, 27 November 2023 China warns of a surge in respiratory illnesses, including flu, adenovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus, following a decline in mycoplasma-caused pneumonia in children. The spread of these pathogens may lead to a major outbreak between now and next spring. Health experts believe that the culprit is likely an existing germ rather than a new pathogen. Mycoplasma, a common pathogen causing pneumonia in children, has a high local resistance to antibiotics in China.
The World Health Organization is now requesting more information from Chinese authorities about a recent, major uptick in respiratory illness in the country.
